Vodafone is pleased to have reached an agreement to introduce a location-based SMS Emergency Warning System for the protection of Vodafone customers in emergency situations.

“We recognise the important role mobile communications plays in any emergency,” said Matthew Lobb, General Manager Industry Strategy and Public Policy at Vodafone. “We have already commenced work to build our location-based emergency warning system, which will be ready for full operation next year.”

Vodafone’s new SMS Emergency Warning System will work in conjunction with TV, radio and other warning systems. The system will provide the capability for the government and emergency services authorities to issue SMS emergency warning alerts to all customers using the Vodafone network, which includes Vodafone, 3, Crazy John’s and wholesale and corporate customers.

One of the main advantages of the location-based SMS Emergency Warning System is that, in addition to providing a warning system to local residents, it will allow SMS alerts to be delivered to international and domestic tourists who are visiting areas where an emergency situation arises.

“The new system will require a significant amount of development and testing, including work by emergency services. We will continue to provide an SMS emergency alert system based on the service address of Vodafone customers until the new system is in place.”

“We place a high priority on maintaining the availability of our mobile network before, during and after any natural disaster,” explained Matthew Lobb. “We always respond quickly to rebuild our network, where necessary, after any severe weather event or natural disaster and we’ll continue to do whatever we can to help get life back to normal as soon as possible for people and communities affected by emergency situations.”
